Moto X - The Rivalry Continued. Round 4

The rivalry continued at the Jamuhuri race track for the Moto X round 4 event on the “Piki Piki za Mbio”. Despite the rainy day and the muddy terrain, nothing could hold the bikes down. From the big boys and girls, every one turned up for the mud races. Even the under 50cc category was well represented on this said day. No one wanted to be left behind.

The event hosted courtesy of the FIM Africa and East Africa Motor Sport Club is among many races held within the country focusing on the Enduro and Motocross. There is a lot of interest growing in these two wheel sports and sponsorship’s are getting better by the day. Every one wants a piece of the cake. Motorcycle fan clubs are also getting bigger in Kenya, with the track, road races and terrains well represented by the Super bikes, Enduros and MX respectively. The turn out during these events is amazing showing the interest in adventure sport, adrenaline rush and a fun time outdoors. Cruisers, we await an invite to your events

Machoni Mwangu Photography and family happened to be spectators at this event and managed to get a few images as represented below:

With a love for nature, outdoors and adventure, I have always wanted to share the beauty of what I see through my eyes. The need to express and share stories with different people about the places and ideologies perceived on my travels did inspire my photography. I bought my first DLSR camera over 4 years ago and through time I have been accumulating lenses and pieces necessary for the job

MachoniMwangu.Photography is more than just taking a picture. It is creating and anticipating a moment with each image in a creative style. My Passion in photography is mostly on nature, adventure sport and travel. My name is Kennedy Muuo

History always has a story to tell with all the amazing images taken revealing what happened, when, where and how. The Image of the “Juvenile Baboon” was captured in Naivasha during a time out with the family. We watched for a while as the baby was always next to his mother. At this particular time, he jumped down on a wall that was well lit, perfect for a shot. I got the chance to sneak up and anticipate stare at me with food on his mouth. Picture was taken using a Canon 7D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens

Enduro Dirt Masters Championships at Champagne park

The Enduro Dirt masters Championship Finals were held at Champagne Park in Ngong. The annual event attracts bikers, campers, nature and mud lovers. Most of all is a good time out to watch different riders battle tough designed courses testing their skills and machines. It is usually very competitive across all the classes, the terrains are almost unforgiving, mental strength is key and a positive attitude is the only way out. The fans are always anticipating good riding and fun along the splashes and so are we

Machoni Mwangu Photography was in place again to showcase the event as it happened through our eyes. Watch out for 2019 events as the year is packed with fun and adventure. See the images of what transpired on this actual day.

The 4 X 4 Challenge has drawn a lot of interest from the petrol heads, adventure and outdoor lovers in Kenya. Over time, the event has been held in different locations from Kipeto to Lukenya where the roads / tracks are un-surfaced, with mud, gravel, rocks or even riverbeds or water filled pools. This time round it was hosted in Champagne park, Kipeto area and for sure a lot of Kenyan motoring enthusiasts came for the event.

The event usually is held over a weekend with activities from qualifiers to the finals per category. All vehicles are scrutinized and given pass to take part. Despite all that, some get to stall, get stuck but through it all each finds its own strength. Different passions are seen through the teams and their vehicles

A relaxed time out to smell outdoors and see nature, see the new upgrades of 4 X 4, meet friends and rally lovers and have a great time with family as well, a getaway plan. Honda Shadow 750cc Cruiser

The Honda Shadow 750cc cruiser is indeed a beauty with gorgeous pipes and shinny chromes. The bike is based on Honda's venerable liquid-cooled 52-degree V-twin engine. It has an impressive torque in the lower rpm ranges. The engine sports twin-plug, three-valve cylinder heads, with two intakes. At calm speeds along the greens, the bike was easy and noisily picking up speed. Fantastic however, the pillion seat is just miniature. For a long distance, it is sure going to hurt your rear.

The well kept and nicely spruced up Honda shadow cruiser got Kevin and I meet up at the Karirana estates one Sunday afternoon for a shoot. The idea was bring out the chrome on the bike against the back ground of the coffee plantations and the blue sky. The clear road and winding turns brought out some great images ideas as well

Birds in Captivity

A visit to Elsamere Conservancy in December 2018 brought us back to several birds that we had seen in captivity 3 years ago at Naivasha Owls centre. The owner of the centre then was Sarah Higgins who took time to rehabilitate eagles, owls and other injured birds that were brought to the centre. These birds had been brought in by well wishers who found them in unfortunate situations. Some had been electrocuted while perching on electric poles while others had been knocked down by man et al

This lady managed to set up the centre in her home which we found to be quite amazing. Several birds had gone through her hands and on recovery were released back to the wild. Others were not so lucky and even after recovery could not be released out. They either missed a body part or were blind meaning that they could not survive in the wild by themselves if released. others had got imprinted on man as well and were not capable of taking care of themselves if released as well

Unfortunately Sarah passed on and the birds were sent out to different locations and fortunately a few were rehabilitated at Elsamere Conservancy Centre where we got to visit and see them this time again. Elsamere opened a bird rescue centre to assist in what Sarah had been doing earlier which we found to be very good of them to assist these creatures. The birds at Sarah’s were split with some being taken to the rescue centre in Elsamere and the others to the raptors rescue centre in Soysambu conservancy. While there, we got to see the below this time round

Unfortunately the great blue Turacco which Sarah was also rehabilitating had been sent to Soysambu conservancy and we did not manage to see it. It was a great sight to behold with beautiful colours. We plan to visit the raptor rescue and rehabilitation centre in Soysambu in the coming year and hope to support the centre as well. Plan to visit and see how you can assist to save our fallen raptors as well

In search of Waterbirds in Lake Naivasha

As the year 2018 was coming to an end and majority were up to their christmas festivities and delicacies, we at Machoni Mwangu photography went on a search of waterbirds in Lake Naivasha. The weather around this time was great with the vegetation around the lake very lush and we expected to see a large variety of birds

We found that waters around the lake were infested with the water hyacinth that was rapidly spreading. this was mostly washed towards the beaches by the current which made it difficult to boat in some areas of the lake. Nevertheless, one morning opened up nicely and we managed boat and see a huge check listing of birds. Below are a few of the images captured and more are on our Nature page

A Lesson in Tennis

Every great dream starts with a dreamer and a lesson in any game will instill a passion in life that could be a turning point for some. Tennis is a racket sport which can be played individually against a single opponent or between two teams of two players each. Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball into the opponent's court. We chose to showcase a passion in tennis with a friend of mine which produced great images as well.

Game Drive in the Nairobi National Park on Eid-al-Adha Day 2018

Public Holidays are usually great days to pack up the family and head out to the park. And so it happened during this holiday of Eid-al-Adha. We decided to head outdoors to our favorite park - Nairobi National Park and view some game.

We were up early and by 0630hrs, we were at the park via the East gate which is through Mombasa road. There were several cars already while checking in and many were anticipating to see the big cats.

I was in hoping to take great pictures as with every drive, there is always amazing scenes and interesting happenings. We made our payments and entered and turned left towards Hippo pools of which we were anticipating a peaceful drive without many people at that time and also game viewing before the rest of the park visitors started storming in. See below some images captured as we slowly drove through the park

The time spent with family is always memorable and to crown it all with something that we all love, makes it even better. Some days are public days in 2019 will come in handy for such plans with the family. Kenya is very beautiful, travel and see the nation before the parks are out run by encroachments

Beautiful Sunrise from the Reef

Got a chance to go the coast, SGR train ride to Mombasa the other day. Been lucky to always get time out to travel as part of work and with it goes my gear too. In my mind i had already planned for all the places that i wanted to visit, the images that i wanted to take and this time round i needed minimal gear to carry. The one thing i was looking forward to was the beautiful sunrise from the sea.

I barely slept the first night despite being tired as i was already looking forward to the morning which appeared as fast as i closed my eyes. 6 o'clock i was up and was surprised that it was still dark. I set my camera, tripod and lens ready for a walk out, drew open the curtains and got back to bed after checking on the phone app to confirm the time that the sun would be out

I kept staring out and after 15 minutes or so later, i found my way down to the beach of the Reef Hotel. As the light started coming out of the clouds, i was already set with my composition. The rest is as below as the sun was coming out

At some point, the light became too bright for my settings and I made a choice to close the aperture and reduce the shutter speeds to allow for less light at a time. The sky seemed dark again for me to try and get as much details as possible

Celebrating Earth day 2018

With the death of Sudan the world's last male northern white rhino in the Ol Pajeta conservancy in Kenya in March 2018, concerns about its extinction became more clearer than before. If scientists are not able breed another male to sire calves with the remaining females, generations to come may not see these huge beautiful creatures. Some may only get to know about them in history through lessons in class or books just as we read about the dinosaurs in the old

As we celebrate Earth day 2018 geared towards going green, specifically encouraging use of more eco-friendly materials remember that every action has a consequence. A simple visit to the park to see nature is purely as a result of huge conservation efforts by the governments and communities. If we do not conserve every aspect of our environment, we may loose what is purely natural. Take a step and do your bit to conserve. Plant a tree or two

A rhino grazing in the Nairobi National Park

A rhino grazing in the Nairobi National Park

People are being encouraged to reduce the use of plastics hence forth. The theme of Earth day 2018 is to End plastic pollution. It may not happen in a day, but a step at a time towards these efforts may go a long way. With the end of using plastic bags in kenya currently underway, it goes to show that it can be done. Take a step and make a pledge to stop the consumption of plastics

Conservation steps taken by all of us will assist save the earth. Its our civic duty to ensure that our environments are clean, to plant trees around us to ensure that we have adequate water and influence better climatic conditions. Someone once said that the flight of a butterfly in one part of the world will indeed influence the weather in another. It might be a small step, but it is a bold step

Offroad riders and Outdoor lovers

The first light at dawn, the calm fresh air, the clean earth that has been washed by the rains, the quiet sight of the gazelles grazing, the tale to tell of the sunbird probing the flowers . . . . Fresh outdoors with only two wheelers, 4X4's and cameras. Thats what i am talking about, thats what i am thinking of today. I just want to go away

The sort of weekend that wakes up at the crack of dawn in a field with flowing waters and rivers. The one time when you will wake up earlier than normal not because you are headed off to work and wont be late, but simply because you do not want to miss a moment with that early bird.

                                                                     KTM Enduro

                                                                     KTM Enduro

No matter what the weather, no matter the career, no matter the religion, no matter the colour; outdoor lovers and adventure riders are just simple people who will not be confined to the four corners of a room. The people who seek the thrill to story tell by the camp fire, listening to crickets and the fire crackers as the tell of the previous adventure.

Most of the time it is just normal people loving the outdoors, riding for pure fun to even nature trailing simply for pure enjoyment. Heroes are not always professionals who are doing the extra-ordinary but normal people like you and I who do what they love. We just love waking up to different sights and sounds and with that the weekend is made.

Super Bike Drag Race in Kenya 2018

A super bike drag race involves two participants lining up at a drag strip waiting signaling by a marshal for the race to start. These bikes race on a long two straight paved tracks and the rider to get to the finish line first is the winner. The race is about who is fast out of the drag strip, who can maintain a higher acceleration and which bike is in the best condition to take it. Experience here matters as small mistakes can prove to be costly.

Apart from the Ducatti panigale 1199R the drag winning bike, several other big super bikes graced the tracks. The likes of Yamaha R1M, Suzuki GSXR 750, Honda CBR 1000RR, Kawasaki ZX 1400r, Yamaha R6, Honda 600RR were here. These bikes were fast and getting them on motion at particular points was a lesson in itself.

The bikes with similar CC,s were paired for the race and the racers got several chances to test their bikes. Muscle and endurance was also tested. The big boys and girls were all ready for the show. Though always riding together as a family, this was race day and everybody was here to show off skill, balls and what their bikes could do

With the increase of traffic in the Kenyan roads recently, the bike seems to be gaining acceptability as a means of transport beyond the adventure. Bike companies should consider taking up this huge opportunity to make available their guns for this market. Commuter bikes, Super bikes and adventure bikes most of all are being seen as the main type of two wheels that majority are gunning up for. Its an opportunity for any recognized company willing to set up shop, sell and maintain the product that will be able to make good margins in this
